TINKERING WITH AUTOMATS: AT THE CONFLUENCE OF ART, SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

The Cabaret Mechanical Theater (CMT) was founded in 1979 in the UK by Sarah Alexander’s mother, Sue Jackson. Today the CMT is considered a central actor in the rebirth of automatons. In this presentation, her current director, Sarah Alexander, will share with us her passion for automatons, creatures that, as she says, exude a touch of eccentricity, an ironic sense of humor and a somewhat astute look at the world and life. It will also introduce us to how CMT continues to roll out its automata exhibitions and workshops around the world and how it encourages people of all ages to make their own automata through affordable and easily accessible online and in-person workshops, kits and manuals.
